This lecture is introducing pH-switchable and photo-crosslinked polymersomes as versatile nanometer-sized objects for establishing functional principles that resemble and imitate simple cell functions. One key issue is to imitate cell functions without using any transmembrane, channel or pore proteins to regulate enzymatic reactions and cellular uptake processes by pH-switchable polymersomes. One other key issue is to integrate those pH-switchable polymersomes as multicompartments for mimicking metabolite mechanisms. For this polymersomes are integrated in constantly permeable hollow capsules. Various examples are shown to underline established functional principles of pH-switchable and photo-crosslinked polymersomes as well hollow capsules for our research interest.

Prof. Dietmar Appelhans was a head of Department of Bioactive and Responsive Polymers in the Leibniz Institute for Polymer Research Dresden. His research topics focusing on the development of multifunctional and bioactive carrier systems and multicompartment systems based on hydrogels, polymeric vesicles and dendritic structures. He published about 160 scientific publications in peer reviewed journals, and more than 10 patents.
